- This paper presents the results of a laboratory study where the relationship between the travel velocity of shear waves Vs through concrete and the unconfined compressive strength UCS of the material has been investigated. Over the range of conditions addressed in the work, a unique relationship was found between UCS and Vs². Based on this result, it is suggested that, after establishing the relationship between UCS and Vs for a particular site, non-destructive shear wave velocity measurements can be used to assess the quality of Fibre Reinforced Shotcrete (FRS) in the field. This risk management approach has the potential to identify whether the FRS target strength has been achieved after the specified curing period, but also provides an opportunity to accelerate productivity (through earlier re-entry or filling) if the material reaches the specified strength prior to the established curing period.
